Best Coffee Shops in Chester UK in 2024

For history and coffee lovers, Chester, England, is an absolute dream. Recently, we were lucky enough to spend seven beautiful weeks here, visiting nearly every cafe and coffee shop in town. Factors such as taste, vibe, and historic charm influenced our decisions in creating a list of the

Best Coffee Shops of Chester UK in 2024

Huxley's

Known for having "the best view in Chester", Huxley's is centrally located and sits next to the famous Eastgate Clock. It is also, conveniently, directly connected to Chester's historic City Walls. Huxley's is home to an intriguing round peephole resembling a ship or submarine window: Some believe the 250-year-old Georgian building was once home to a retired sea captain! Here, customers can peep through the circular glass for picturesque views over Chester’s historic Eastgate Street.

We enjoyed chit-chatting with the owners each week, and were excited to learn that, in addition to brewing coffee, they also brew their own beer and generally have two homemade brews available on tap each week! De-LISH!!! We loved this place so much - we got ENGAGED here!!!!

Fika

It should come as no surprise that another all-time favorite is another historical gem, also attached to Chester’s City Wall path. Located on, arguably, the most beautiful turn of the path, Fika faces the mountains of North Wales. Inside, Fika’s owner has created the most cozy and enchanting ambiance while maintaining the building’s historic charm. The moment we walked in, we looked at each other and said, "we could live here". Fika is home to one of the BEST Chai Lattes around, made from all natural spices. They also make fresh sourdough daily and delightfully mouth-watering pastries. This is one of our favorite coffee shops - not only in England, but on the PLANET!

The Naughty Badger

Unlike the other two other shops, the Naughty Badger is almost completely hidden from sight. In fact, it was only after we had been in Chester for almost a month that we stumbled upon it walking through Chester's Diamond District. Located by some of the most beautiful of Chester's antique jewelry stores, The Naughty Badger is situated on the top floor of one of the city’s historical tudor-style buildings. It is easy to miss, as one has to walk up a narrow stairwell to find it, and only a small sign indicates it from the street. However, upon entering, one feels immediately at home. The first thing we spotted was a big old chocolate cake: It looked so dark and delicious, it reminded us of the famous "blood, sweat, and tears cake" poor “Brucy” had to devour in Roald Dahl's "Matilda". (So obviously we ordered it.) This. Cake…... IS the most delicious chocolate cake we have EVER had. We discovered that below the sultry velvety dark chocolate exterior, lies several layers of vanilla cake separated by an orange jaffa filling. They literally call it their “Jaffa Cake”, inspired by the beloved British cookie. This cake was SO GOOD, that for our wedding in Brazil, we actually tried to have it reproduced. (But simply NOTHING is as good.) Did we mention it is also coincidentally vegan? (We are not vegan.) 3 words: EAT THE CAKE. One simply cannot miss The Naughty Badger for coffee, cake, and a heck of an English Breakfast. An absolute DELIGHT!
