Featuring one of the most breathtaking, panoramic views of the city, Rome's ancient cylindrical castle, Castel Sant'Angelo (also known as the Mausoleum of Hadrian and the "Castle of the Holy") serves as a monument, archaeological site, and museum. Little known to most, it also features a full-service cafe atop its ancient tower!
Once one of the tallest buildings in Rome, the castle initially served as a mausoleum for Roman Emperor, Hadrian, and his family. Later, popes used the building as a fortress and castle and opened it to the public as a museum. The castle now showcases historical artifacts such as antique weaponry, coins, ceramics, antique furniture, and art. From atop the tower, one can marvel at the exquisite beauty of Rome from every direction.
The castle cafe features outdoor tables perched along its ancient walls. During our spontaneous visit, we were extremely lucky to have spotted an open table with a direct view of the Vatican. We enjoyed a truly "picture-perfect" lunch of eggplant parmesan and ravioli along with an absolutely breathtaking view of the city.
As it turns out, one can satisfy both one's appetite and love of history all within the castle walls! We highly recommend a visit to Castel Sant'Angelo on your next trip to Rome!
